Convenient inland water connections

A substantial portion of the transport of goods in our region is done via inland waterways. West Flanders has two waterways of international significance which are accessible to ships of more than 2,000 tonnes (class Va): the rivers Leie and the Scheldt.

There are also 5 canals of economic importance in West Flanders:

  • Canal Bruges – Ostend (2,000 tons)
  • Canal Bruges – Ghent (1,350 tons)
  • Baudouin Canal Bruges – Zeebrugge (+2,000 tons)
  • Canal Roeselare – Leie (1,350 tons)
  • Canal Bossuit – Kortrijk (1,350 tons)

Considering that some 85% of all businesses are located along or within less than 15 km of a navigable waterway, this modus offers many opportunities. As a result, continuous investments are made to develop and improve their own quay facilities.
