Logistical multimodal hubs
The province of West Flanders has two bimodal terminals: the bimodal inland navigation terminal (Avelgem Container terminal) and a bimodal railway terminal, the LAR in Menen.
The Avelgem Container was the first inland navigation terminal in Flanders. Besides daily connections with the ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, there are also adjacent activities, such as road transport, customs and warehousing for some of the big shipping companies. The main focus is on the Walloon and North French market.
The Railway terminal LAR is situated in the south of West Flanders and covers a total surface of 72 ha. The LAR-terminal is part of the NARCON-project, which offers subsidized short-haul transport by rail. There is a daily connection by shuttle train to the Antwerp Main Hub and back. Besides transport, customs clearance and logistical activities are developed.
